The fastest industrial transformation in history. ICE is dying. EV and software-defined vehicles are rising. CATL and BYD now define the battery frontier. Germany's OEMs are fighting for survival. South Korea is winning the battery arms race.
The sector splits into three distinct career tracks:
designing vehicles at Toyota, BMW, Hyundai, Tesla;
the most strategically critical and fastest-growing specialisation, dominated by CATL, LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and Panasonic;
Bosch, Continental, Denso, Magna, Valeo — the companies that make the components the OEMs assemble. Graduate hiring is deepest at Tier 1 suppliers in Germany and Japan, most concentrated at EV OEMs in the USA, and most strategically important in South Korea for battery engineering. China is a genuine Tier 1 for those willing and able to work there — BYD and CATL are technically world-class. The UK is in structural manufacturing decline but has real premium-brand engineering (Jaguar Land Rover going all-electric, MINI, Bentley) — viable Tier 2 specifically for premium vehicle engineering.
